Woodson Merrell, Md: Leading the Way toward A Truly Integrative Healthcare System

Woodson Merrell, MD, or Woody, as he is known to his friends and associates, is executive director of The Continuum Center for Health & Healing (CCHH) at Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC), New York, where for 8 years he has guided the operations of a comprehensive outpatient center for clinical care, research, and education in integrative medicine. He is also Chairman of BIMC’s newly formed Department of Integrative Medicine, dedicated to transforming all care at the hospital to integrative. Dr Merrell, a certifi ed physician-acupuncturist, has been incorporating a wide range of complementary modalities into his private practice in internal medicine, where he emphasizes prevention and early intervention, for the past 22 years. Dr Merrell is also assistant clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he developed one of the nation’s first comprehensive medical school courses on complementary medicine. He has served on the executive and steering committees of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (imconsortium.org), which works to bring the principles of integrative medicine to medical school education and physician practice.
