Abstract
For any athlete, training is a cycle of exercise and recovery. Restoration of homeostasis and accrual of performance gains occur solely during the recovery phase. Two types of homeostasis—oxidative and immunologic—are important for the muscular and energetic adaptations that occur in the interims between training sessions. It has been known for decades that oxidative stress is attenuated by antioxidants. However, the unveiling of nutritional influences on immune mediators is relatively recent.
