The Necessity of a Good Multi: Moving Beyond The Headlines

by Dr. Chad Larson

Dr. Chad Larson discusses how to talk about multivitamins with your patients in light of the most recent headlines, bringing them back from this diversion that has clouded what really matters.

“This may come as a shocker, but not all multivitamins are created equally. In my opinion, the junk that you can purchase in most places like grocery stores, drug stores, and warehouse-type stores is not helpful for your health and may even be a little harmful.

First of all, multivitamins don’t kill you. I agree that there are some really crappy multivitamins out there that probably do more harm than good, but according to the Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers’ National Poison Data System (NPDS) published in 2012, deaths from consumption of multivitamins totaled exactly zero.”

Topics include:

  • Vitamin E: Quality of vitamin E and “d” alpha tocopherol or “mixed” tocopherols Vs. “dl” alpha tocopherol
  • Vitamin D: Store bought multivitamins come up short
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamin)
  • Vitamin B5 & its bioactive form, calcium-d-pantothenate
  • Folic Acid: Quatrefolic® or Metafolin®
  • Vitamin B12: The difference between methylcobalamin Vs. Cyanocobalamin
