Resveratrol and curcumin: Harnessing synergy and maximizing bioavailability

Abstract
Resveratrol and curcumin are the most thoroughly studied polyphenols in integrative medicine. Diverse lines of scientific evidence indicate benefits such as cellular, metabolic, cardiovascular and cognitive health, and recent research has supported a convergence of clinical indications for these compounds. In light of the remarkable overlap in applications and robust efficacy of combinations in preclinical studies, it is not surprising that in the last 2 years, researchers have identified functional synergy between these compounds in antioxidant activity, signal transduction, gene expression and cellular health. read more…

Enhancing bioavailability through nature’s example

By Kelly C. Heim, Ph.D.

Abstract
Every cell in the body is an organized coalescence of aqueous and lipid components. Thus, to sustain physiological function and overall health, the body requires both water- and fat- soluble nutrients. While the digestive tract has evolved ways to absorb both types, water solubility offers a salient advantage. As the intestinal environment is aqueous, or watery, these compounds can readily dissolve and disperse, contacting a large area of epithelial surface in the intestine. Maximal surface contact facilitates optimal absorption across the epithelium. read more…
