New CRN/VIRGO Webinar to Help Keep Companies from Stumbling Into Regulatory Pitfalls —GRAS, NDIs and Border Detention Issues Addressed—

Washington, D.C., May 13, 2014The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) and VIRGO Publishing today announced an industry-wide webinar focusing on challenges companies are facing in the current climate of transitioning regulations. The webinar, entitled, “Avoiding Regulatory Pitfalls: GRAS, NDIs and Border Detention,” will feature legal and regulatory experts presenting on three current issues that haven’t been widely discussed, but have been affecting companies in the dietary supplement industry: 1) red flags raised about the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) self-affirmation process; 2) what triggers the need for a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) Notification; and 3) why so many incoming ingredients are getting detained at the border. The webinar will take place on June 11, from 2–4 pm EDT.

“Navigating regulations requires up-to-date knowledge that reflects the current regulatory climate,” said Duffy MacKay, N.D., senior vice president, scientific & regulatory affairs, CRN, who will moderate the webinar. “But at the present time, many companies are feeling especially challenged by new authorities provided by the Food Safety Modernization Act that affect border detention. In addition, NDI notification requirements are still in flux, and even the process of getting an ingredient ‘generally recognized as safe’, is under new scrutiny. All companies should arm themselves with the basics on how to reduce legal and regulatory risks, and our upcoming  webinar will offer valuable insights from FDA and top attorneys.”

Webinar presenters include: Steve Casper, Ph.D., FDA, Division of Dietary Supplement Programs, NDI Team; Quyen Tien, FDA, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Office of Compliance; Ivan Wasserman, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP; Jeannie Perron, D.V.M., Covington & Burling, LLP; and Ricardo Carvajal, Hyman, Phelps & McNamara, P.C. More information on the speakers and agenda is available on the web.

The registration fee—$149 for CRN members and $199 for non-members—is a per registration site fee, so multiple people may participate in the webinar from a single site, such as a company’s conference room. This fee also includes unlimited access to the on-demand recording of the webinar for 90 days. Additional details and registration information are available at: www.crnusa.org/pitfalls.
