FREE Webinar on Supplement Safety for Pharmacists and Nurse Practitioners
The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the leading trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, today announced that Rick Kingston, PharmD., will be the featured presenter during a free webinar for pharmacists and nurse practitioners (NPs) on dietary supplements and adverse event reporting results, Thursday, March 3, at 1 p.m. Eastern. Dr. Kingston is co-founder and president, regulatory and scientific affairs for SafetyCall International; clinical professor, University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy; and adjunct professor, National Center for Natural Product Research, University of Mississippi. The webinar is presented exclusively to members of Skipta’s Pharmacist Society and Generation NP communities. Skipta is the leading network of specialized online medical communities for verified health care professionals.
During this one-hour webinar, “Safety by the Numbers: Making Sense of Dietary Supplement Adverse Event Data,” Dr. Kingston will present adverse event reporting conclusions from the Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act of 2006 that requires dietary supplement companies to report all serious adverse events to FDA. As importantly, Dr. Kingston will provide context for these numbers, as well as reports from poison control centers and from emergency rooms, to address some of the confusion regarding the safety profile for the dietary supplement category.
The webinar is part of an ongoing series presented by CRN through Skipta’s Pharmacist Society and Generation NP communities. “Pharmacists and nurse practitioners are on the front lines helping consumers stay healthy so it’s important that they have an accurate picture of what the data on AERs really means,” said Judy Blatman, senior vice president, communications, CRN. “We’re very pleased that someone with Dr. Kingston’s level of expertise in this area has agreed to answer questions from this important audience.”
Dr. Kingston was recently invited by the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus (DSC) to present a similar presentation on Capitol Hill to legislators and their staff at a DSC briefing. SafetyCall International is a multidisciplinary health care practice that operates the world’s largest 24/7 human and animal adverse event call center. The company is an associate member of CRN.
The webinar will also be available on demand following the live event. For more information and to register for the free webinar, see: www.crnusa.org/skipta.
