Alternative Treatments For Attention deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder: Does Evidence Support Their Use?

Alan W. Brue, PhD, and Thomas D. Oakland, PhD

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a treatable but incurable and complex condition. Children and adolescents predominantly are affected, with onset typically between ages 3 and 7 years.1 However, given the lifelong qualities of the condition, adults also exhibit ADHD symptoms. From 6% to 8% of school-aged children2—approximately 2 to 3 million—are affected in the United States.3 The disorder is more common in boys,4 with the male-to-female ratio ranging from 2-to-1 to 10-to-1.
